Day Shift Midnight Texas Charlaine Harris Books

Harris is in fine form here with the second installment in her Midnight, Texas trilogy. Things just aren't the same in Midnight. Lemuel the vampire is absent on business, a mysterious fast growing boy is dropped off with the Rev, the town's abandoned hotel is undergoing a pointless gut renovation and one of Manfred's clients drops dead during a private reading. Manfred is fingered by the woman's son as the prime suspect in her murder and the theft of her missing jewelry. The town's residents marshall all their considerable supernatural resources to find the jewels and clear Manfred's name, but come up short. To solve the case and wrap things up, outside muscle, in the form of two other minor characters from the Sookie Stackhouse series make an appearance. Well paced and plotted, with plenty of snappy dialogue and well drawn action sequences, this is a worthwhile read.

Day Shift Midnight Texas Charlaine Harris Books Reviews

Harris brings in characters from her Sookie Stackhouse novels. You are either going to like this or not. I personally liked it because the first two novels are really slow to build the characters, so bringing in Sookie's friends kept me interested.

I think my problem with this series is that Manfred is just not that interesting. He's a shallow personality and has none of the spunk and sass that Sookie has. However, in Book 2 a few more hints about the other residents of Midnight are thrown out, so I'm hoping Book 3 continues the upswing.
This is the second book in the series, and if you haven’t read the first book,Midnight Crossroad (A Novel of Midnight, Texas) , then I strongly recommend you do so before starting this one. Things will make a lot more sense if you know the backgrounds of some of the characters from book one.

While most small towns would welcome the opening of a new business and the customers it would attract, the residents of Midnight, Texas (population 261) are leery when the old Midnight Hotel is purchased by an out of town buyer and renovated as short and long-term housing. The last thing that anyone wants is to see a bunch of strangers hanging around Midnight observing its odd inhabitants – nothing about this tiny town in the middle of nowhere is “normal”, least of all its residents.

Meanwhile, the resident psychic, Manfred, comes under scrutiny when one of his clients dies during a reading and a member of her family implicates Manfred in the theft of her jewelry. Manfred enlists the help of his fellow Midnighters in clearing his name. After all, what’s a psychic to do when his reputation is called into question?

I liked this story a lot. I was ambivalent about the first book, but I like the way this series is shaping up. Many readers might be familiar with the author’s “Sookie Stackhouse” series, and while this series is totally different it does contain some of the same elements. You have quirky characters that may or may not be what they seem. There’s a general air of creepiness but it’s juxtaposed against the charming and mundane aspects of small town life. People (if they really are “people”) go over each other’s houses for dinner, lend each other a hand and in general act like the good folks of Mayberry…if Mayberry were inhabited by supernatural beings.

Charlaine Harris does a great job of conjuring up a unique sense of place and making her oddball cast of characters both sympathetic and a tad scary. Are they good or evil? Do you really even care? The central mystery involving Manfred is underwhelming, but the greater mystery of the Midnight Hotel is quite intriguing (and is left unanswered in this installment). I found this to be a fast-paced story although the plotting has its awkward moments. The bottom line is that I’m firmly hooked and will pre-order book three as soon as its release date is announced.

I don’t recall much in the way of strong language and there is no explicit sexual content. There are some violent scenes but the gore factor is low.
SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW

I really liked Midnight Crossing. I felt Charlaine Harris was moving on from Sookie and creating a new universe. The town of Midnight TX was weird and as Kirkus Review was quoted "A little magic, a little mystery and a lot of imagination...". I agreed with that and after I read Midnight Crossing I looked forward to the next installment. I wanted to see how these characters were going to come to life. I even paid for the hard cover of Day Shift just so I didn't have to wait another 6-12 months for the paperback version to come out.

Then I read Day Shift. What a disappointment. Sadly the author not only tied Midnight TX to her Sookie universe, she basically inundated this book with characters from that other world. Barry the Bellhop, references to Sookie in Bon Temps, Quinn, shifters and fangbangers. And the plots revolving around these crossover characters were thin and to me totally unnecessary to the development of the Midnight universe. Did she do this just to introduce a shifter child to Midnight? I thought the world of Midnight as shown in the first book was interesting on its own and allowed the author a lot of room for growth. Now it seems to be just an offshoot of her other established universe even though there are unique characters in the Midnight universe waiting to be explored further.

In Day Shift the development of the main plot of Rachel passing while receiving a reading from Manfred was almost like an afterthought. The death of two people that Olivia was visiting in the hotel is basically brushed over. The introduction of characters from the author's other major universe seemed to be the driving force for this book and detracted from the development of the Midnight characters. There were unanswered questions and red herrings in this book that left me unsatisfied.

I wish the author had continued to develop the Midnight universe on its own. Honestly I can see no reason for the crossover. There is enough weirdness in Midnight to warrant a stand alone spot. I can only hope that this is a one time intrusion and the author will get back to developing the characters in Midnight. Now that we know EVERYONE in Midnight has his or her own strangeness it will be fun to see them developed ON THEIR OWN. I just hope Sookie doesn't show up in one of these books, or other main characters in her universe. That would truly be a shame, and I doubt I would read any further installments.

P.S. One thing I really did enjoy was the color map of Midnight. I hope it makes it in to the paperback edition.
