Let Me Go An Archie Sheridan / Gretchen Lowell Novel Chelsea Cain Books

The new Chelsea Cain Sheridan/Lowell thriller is an engaging, fast read. If you're ready to hit the beach and want a solid summer novel, this one will work. With one caveat: you'll need some scuba gear to get through the oceans of blood that are spilled in the course of the novel.

Archie's birthday is approaching and, with it, Halloween. A DEA agent is found murdered and Susan's (the reporter) boyfriend (who is working as an undercover agent for the DEA) was working with the dead agent. His father is a major northwest drug dealer and with his handler gone he will be assigned a new liaison. Unfortunately, that liaison may be dirty. The undercover guy (Leo Reynolds) would be compromised and likely killed. Since Archie has feelings for Susan, his protective instincts go into high gear and he is drawn into the case.

Leo's father is about to throw a major costume-party bash on his private island. The party (minor SPOILER) is actually a cover for a meeting with some Russian dealers; with everyone wearing masks it will be easier to come and go and transact business.

Archie turns up on the island uninvited and so does, we eventually learn, our old friend Gretchen Lowell. Archie is knocked out and the mutilated body of a young woman turns up. Was Gretchen the perp? Or is Gretchen there to see Archie and, eventually, help him with the case? And what will transpire in the meantime--some Olympic-level sex? A little scalpel work on Archie's belly? All of the above?

The novel holds your attention. The plot moves along briskly. The story is sexy, creepy, titillating, wildly implausible and generally satisfying.

The issues: the author plunges right in at the outset, not explaining the relationships among the characters. New readers can piece this all together for themselves, but there will be some initial confusion for first-timers. Then there is the big issue. In some ways this is a recognizable story; in some ways it is not. Basically, we have Hannibal and Clarice with reversed genders, a psychopath and a love object. There are some big differences, however. Hannibal does not brutalize Clarice in the ways that Gretchen has brutalized Archie, though her rough splenectomy from their earlier encounter (minor SPOILER) turns out to be a boon in this novel.

Gretchen is not just a psychopath; she is a sadistic killer who enjoys seeing her victims suffer. She is also hypersexual, so that her relationship with Archie always involves contradictory impulses. She's a babe and he can't wait to see her; she's a monster and he knows that he should kill her. This makes for fascinating, high-intensity personal dynamics which, one must assume, Chelsea Cain's readers now like and expect. Those who pick up the series for the first time, not knowing what to expect, may find it over-the-top with scenes that are offensive and distasteful. Caveat emptor. It is what it is and those with a taste for it will enjoy this new episode--a tight-time frame, murder-on-an-island, sexy serial killer novel.

Let Me Go An Archie Sheridan / Gretchen Lowell Novel Chelsea Cain Books Reviews

"Happy Halloween, darling."

Archie Sheridan can't catch a break. The sixth installment opens to Archie celebrating his 42nd birthday with his family. It seems he has regained some semblance of a normal life, despite the infamous Gretchen Lowell still on the run from a state mental hospital. Sadly, Gretchen doesn't make much of an appearance in the first third of the book, other then flashback memories in Archie's tortured mind.

Archie begins investigating the powerful Reynolds family, assisting Leo whilst he works undercover for the DEA. Unfortunately, this storyline isn't as interesting as it sounds. There's a lot of posturing and talk of corruption, and the plot is dragged out way too much. For the first time ever, I found Archie actually a little boring. Without his pill addiction or obsession over Gretchen, he sleeps and eats like a regular person. Even his relationship with Rachel is progressing at a normal, boring rate. And just when you thought all hope was lost... Gretchen is back. Well, it is Archie's birthday after all. She wouldn't miss it for the world. And boy, does she give him a birthday present he won't forget in a hurry.

With Gretchen back in town, the man-hunt is back on and the story really starts to heat up. Susan Ward, the lovable ex-reporter, now sporting jet-black hair with a very Cruella De Vil white stripe, becomes embroiled in Leo's investigation, and inadvertently puts her life on the line. Archie's attempts to save her threatens his own life, and when you throw Gretchen into the mix, the body count sky rockets. Can he catch her once and for all, or can Gretchen finally let him go?

This sixth book slowly veers off course for a while, straightening out towards the end. With Cain;s next book a stand-alone unrelated to this series, the only consultation we have until the next book is that Gretchen is still out there. Watching. Waiting.
Archie Sheridan is a troubled homicide detective in Portland, Oregon. He's obsessed with serial killer Gretchen Lowell, who once held and tortured him, but who also excites him like no one else. In past books Gretchen, dubbed the Beauty Killer by the press, has been captured but has escaped, and is currently at large as the novel opens on the death of a DEA agent, putting a long-term undercover investigation at risk. Archie wants to warn a friend of his that he's in danger when evidence turns up that Gretchen has contacted Archie.

I really enjoy this series. Archie is a great protagonist and other characters, like his partner and reporter Susan Ward, are quite well fleshed out and interesting. Author Cain also brings charming Portland to life (though oddly I don't think she's ever had a scene in the iconic and labyrinthine Powell's Books).

I agree with other reviewers that something is needed to inject vitality into the Archie-Gretchen dynamic, though. Archie is just too smart and empathetic to be led around by Gretchen so completely. Something needs to happen. OR we need to get into Gretchen's frightening head a bit more. How/why did she become a killer, for instance? Why does she keep sparing Archie?

I think this book has been the weakest of the five, but it was still eminently readable, and I look forward to another. Cain's writing and descriptions of both people and the city elevate a less-than-flawless entry in the series.

In order the books are Heartsick, Sweetheart, Kill You Twice, The Night Season and Let Me Go. An excellent series, though quite gory. Not for the faint of heart.
