Fire Birds The King Of Clayfield Book 3 eBook Shane Gregory

The first book was awesome for me, however the next two.. really disappointing. I feel robbed.

The main character spends the entire book responding to events that happen to him. There is no plot, things just happen, there is no goal. He is searching for people, and while searching for someone he gets kidnapped and held hostage, then when he escapes he needs to get revenge on a kidnapper, but then he gets attacked by a plane. It's kinda funny because the plot "tasks" queue up in your brain and you realize you're going to have to wade through chapters to get back to the original plot point.

His constant stupidity made reading an infuriating experience. argh. Please stop searching for other people! Get some food and a decent place to stay!... He even attacked a tank and then hung around for a rest after, even though his enemies had told him reinforcements would be coming and.. surprise! they did!

In general I only liked the books for the interplay between the main character and his girlfriends, and even then he couldn't just let them be happy for a chapter or two could he.. no they disappeared and he had to spend his time searching.. again! and again!

Fire Birds The King Of Clayfield Book 3 eBook Shane Gregory Reviews

If your into zombies apocalypse novels then this is a series for you. About a small town museum director and when the crap hits the fan he turns into a badass. In the beginning he knows absolutely nothing but as time passes he becomes the man you depend on I would want him on my team if things went south.
This is the third book in the King Of Clayfield series. Each book so far has made me care about the characters like virtually no other books have. Zombie, schombie, I'm talking hard literature which specializes in investing your emotions in the protagonists' lives. Book three does this even more heartbreakingly than the first and second books did.

Just wow.

The apocalypse here is global, but you get to see it day to day in just a small corner of Kentucky. Unlike other books, the protagonists are not heroes, but regular folks who try, fail, try, succeed, fail... and keep trying. There is no heroic building of kingdoms, the protagonists are not able to smite zombies by the hundreds. Reading this book made me feel each painful day as the characters just try to survive.

I had hoped this book would last me a few days, but no such luck. Once I was pulled in, I could not stop until the conclusion. There are moments in this book when you are taken aback by events that, like real life, don't offer you closure. Actions take place which are not neatly wrapped up. Please understand, the author's writing style and story telling are virtually perfect.. and he purposely creates events that lack closure. Just like in real life, you get to find out part of the story, but there is no omnipotent narrator to tell you what happens behind the scenes. You just look away from the book, stare at a wall, and think "That did not just happen. Please tell me that did not just happen!" Some of the plot flow is emotionally devestating.

I wish the author wrote another dozen books in this series... I'm just not sure if I can handle the stress of the storyline for so many more books...

This is in the top 1% of books I've ever read - if you look at some of my other reviews, you'll see that when I consider a book to be bad, I attempt to eviscerate it. But in the case of good and great books, as in the case of Fire Birds, high praise is fully deserved. I would suggest, though, that you read the first two books before starting this one.
He's not special forces trained, or a genius, or prepper, or anything you will find in many other books of this genre, but the main character does seem to come out on top. How? He admits he is not prepared but does his best with what he's got. This series is really down to earth. Instead of being bullet proof or a ninja expert he actually gets hurt! And he gets beat up! His not willing to give up attitude, though, against all odds makes him a great character. Oh, I wont look at Batman the same after this book. You have to read the book to find out why. D
I've been downright enthralled with these KING OF CLAYFIELD novels. In a genre that's crowded, to say the least, what we have here in these fast paced novels is memorable stuff and a worthy addition to the better body of zombie survival/horror fiction. FIRE BIRDS, the third and final (?)installment in this series finds our hero, No Name Museum curator, once more trying to figure out how to survive in his post-apocalyptic hometown of Clayfield, KY. At the opening of FIRE BIRDS, he is alone and it's eating at him. However, for good or ill, that loneliness doesn't last. What follows are a series of brutal misadventures and miscommunications that leave him and his fellow survivors one step ahead of joining the ranks of the living dead.

The characters, their motives, and how they interact with one another are very well realized in all three novels, but Shane Gregory outdoes himself with this concluding volume. Zombies, psychopaths, church girls gone bad and a particularly clingy frat boy who calls everyone, "bro," make for a memorable read in the land of the living dead. We're talking actin and adventure, life and death struggles, and cosplay gone so very wrong, it has to be experienced.

It is my fervent hope that Gregory will return the readers to Clayfield, KY sometime soon, so that we may see how the intrepid Museum curator has fared.
I've enjoyed all three of the King of Clayfield books. Definitely read them in order! The story builds in each book. I like how realistic the book is - no magic guns in the right place at the right time. The heroes face problems that seem realistic in the post-Canton B world. I got so into the books that I started thinking about having "stash cars" around town. Turns out that's not practical ) I would never want to survive after an apocalypse, but this series does a good job of explaining what that world may look like.

I think it's cool that the author is also a Kentucky resident who works as a museum director. The old saying applies - write what you know. Let's just hope the zombie stuff stays part of the author's imagination.
