Jackaroo A Novel of the Kingdom Cynthia Voigt Books
This is a GREAT book! I remember reading this book as a kid and loved it! I bought this book again as I went back and re-read some of the books that really stood out to me as a kid. The main character is a girl that both girls and boys can relate to. She's a well rounded character that faces real challenges and sees quality character development. The story is set in a feudal era and encompasses all of the real world things of that time. No magic. Just solid exploration of the time period. I'm reading this to my nieces and nephews now and they love it. I would highly recommend this book.

Jackaroo A Novel of the Kingdom Cynthia Voigt Books Reviews
After reading the reviews on this page, I had high expectations for this young adult adventure novel. It didn't really live up to my expectations, or indeed make me want to read beyond the first few chapters. While Gwyn is an admirable heroine and the "Jackaroo" legend at the core of the book is a great plot idea, the overall story has many flaws. It starts slow, and takes itself too seriously, with no humor in it.
My main complaint is with the characters. The two young boys, Tad and the young Lord Gaderian, have little personality and they don't act or talk realistically for children. I have to admit, I did not finish reading this book, so it's possible the characters get better later on. However, my impression was that they were stereotypical and lacked the spark that makes characters interesting.
The fictional world is also lacking in creativity. Called simply the "Kingdom," it contains the "Inn," the "Village" and the "King's City." The common people are oppressed by the wealthy Lords, but no explanation is offered for the root causes of this situation, what the Lords are really up to, and why even they can't leave the "Kingdom."
There is a certain gritty realism here in that the novel depicts a bleak upbringing without material comforts and security. In this I'm reminded of Margaret J. Anderson's "Searching for Shona" and "To Nowhere and Back," which I recommend reading instead of Jackaroo. They also feature strong heroines in bleak fictional landscapes, but they are more convincingly written.
This book was amazing. I just wasn't fully hooked until about five chapters in when the adventure of the book was introduced and the hero was created. Other then that, though, I loved this book and would highly recommend it to anyone that loves romance, adventure and fantasy.
Got as a gift for mom, she says it is an excellent read. Nice little paperback copy, although the first one I received was ruined.
If you are thinking about reading this book I urge you to stop thinking and start reading. I read it for the first time as a teenager and have read it again so many times since then. I get lost in the Kingdom each time I enter it and I find that I cannot stay away from the series for very long. I especially recommend it for girls who are looking for inspiration and are tired of the damsel-in-distress stories that are so often marketed toward girls and women. So, stop reading reviews and just read the book!
Absolutely amazing book! I love the morals displayed in the way the main character notices the suffering of others in what we traditionally think of as a dark (& even perhaps uncaring) time. It makes the medeval days more realistic & human to see the good & not just to focus on the hardness of life then.
This is the first book in the Kingdom series. The heroine is a strong character with a quixotic streak, who learns the difficulty of helping other people -- it's not as easy as it seems! The writing is elegant, the plot is interesting and unusual, the characterization is excellent and you quickly grow to care for her and her family. The Kingdom is well-imagined, and it's interesting to see how separate the lives of the nobles are from the common people. I have read this book three times over a 14 year period, and still enjoy it as much as ever.
I couldn't find the cover I wanted for this book, but I love the story. It's a good mix of uncertainties, a bit of coming of age, secrets, bravado, a bit of feminism, and the necessary darkness to balance things out.
