I had no expectations when I started this book, so I cannot say I had any disappointments. I owned a used book store for several years, and Sparks books perennially sold very well, and several customers told me they thought this was better than his fiction. No one ever told me anything about what sort of book it was or what it dealt with, so the only thing I had to go on was the cover blurbs. I had the opportunity, so I gave it a try. The writing is very good (not having read any of Nicolas Sparks' fiction, I cannot compare it to those). The title and the blurbs led me to think I was going to read about Nicholas and Michael Sparks' time spent together. What it turned out to be was an extremely light reporting of their 3 week 'round the world tour (not a lot of information and very little impressions) serving as a platform for extensive autobiographical flashbacks. As such it was an interesting vehicle to construct an autobiography around, and the autobiography itself was interesting and engaging - much better than most I've read. Like good fiction, I was anxious to read on and find out how things turn out (I won't give any spoilers). It claims to have been jointly written, and if that's true I absolutely could not see two different people in the writing. It definitely was good enough to lure me into reading some other Nicholas Sparks books.

Three Weeks with My Brother Nicholas Sparks Micah Sparks 9780446694858 Books Reviews

I've read many of Nicholas Sparks novels and have loved them all! I want to write a book about my very interesting life, but don't think I could ever finish it. Reading about his autistic son reminded me of what my husband and I went through with our first born Tnen, I had a brain aneurysm rupture fortunately after our son went to live in a group home with other disabled men.
Throughout Sparks' work, there is a young female, usually Caucasian, who comes to some town in Nicholas Sparks' home state (No doubt for the same reason why John Waters sets all his written screenplays in Baltimore, Maryland.), crosses paths with a handsome, flawless male specimen (Not making this up), falls in love with him and vice versa, but tragedy strikes (usually some form of cancer) and one of the lovers either dies or is saved at the last minute from this tragic event. Basically, it's the same old, same old. Not in this story. This is about Sparks as a child growing up in California and how he went onto a three week trip around the globe with his brother after their sister, the inspiration for A Walk To Remember, dies. Will they learn anything from this three week journey? Will their bond strengthen? No matter what conclusion you come to after reading this, at least, this isn't a fictional story and at least it doesn't take place in North Carolina.
Nicholas Sparks and his brother,Micah, went on the trip of a lifetime. While they saw amazing sites that most of us can only dream about- they also spent meaningful time together. Interwoven in the details of their trip are the details of their lives. They have experienced great joy in their marriages , children , and great success in their careers. But they have also experienced great loss- more than most of us and a younger age than many of us do. It is a great story of family love.
I loved this book. Nicholas Sparks was completely open about his feelings and his brother's feelings. Even though it was sad in places, he showed what it truly feels to lose a loved one. The best part was him talking openly about his son's problems with Autism and how, with love and a LOT of WORK, some of these problems CAN BE OVERCOME! I have a great-grandson whom I love dearly who has Autism. I can see progress every time I see him through his family being aware and giving loving support. He is also blessed with a teacher this year who has an autistic child and understands him so he actually made 3 As and 2 Bs for the first time in his school history. Awareness is sooooo important.
I really like Nicholas Sparks novels except for the fact that they don't come out right. The boy and girl fall madly in love, just as you expect and want them to do. But then the woman gets a note saying that her lover is dead. I swear I am all finished reading his books. What makes him do that? Against the background of a fast round the world tour, touching all the great wonders of the world with his brother, Sparks wrote about the way he grew up. And then you know why all the morbidity that he puts into his novels. I am not going to stop reading the novels,or watching the wonderful movies made from them. I would not have missed Message in a Bottle or The Notebook for all the novels that work out the way you expect them to. The stories, ten hankie chick flicks through they are,are just too good to miss. After all we all love a good cry.
This was a great book! Somewhat different than the "Normal" Nicholas Sparks books. However a wonderful insight to his growing up years and the trip of a lifetime with his brother. The way it's written is like your walking thru time with them. There trials and tribulations of dealing with a mentally ill father and an over achiever mother who always wants there life to seem as though it's perfect. I felt a part of his family as I read certain parts of this heartfelt message and the memories they have shared throughout there life's.
He chose a three-week trip around the world with his brother to wrap around his autobiography and where some of the inspirations in his life came from. It was well done and reads a bit like fiction. I want to give this five stars because my mom told me to read it, but I can't. I have solid memories from very young, but he stretches my belief about the intellectual impact and understanding he ascribes to memories from such a young age. Maybe he is different from the rest of us or maybe just a better story-teller.
