Full Mortality A Nikki Latrelle Racing Mystery Sasscer Hill Books Reviews
Nikki Latrelle is a very likeable character right from the start. She could step out of one of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series as a more serious Stephanie but with a personality that draws you towards her in the same manner. I love horseracing which is why I picked up the book. I'm still a novice in the sport so learning more about the world of the backside was very appealing. But you don't need to really know anything about racing to enjoy this book which has an Agatha Christie feel to it. In fact, Ms. Sasscer Hill was just nominated for the Agatha award for best first novel. This novel definitely warrants her nomination. But getting back to the book, it is a very easy read, you can read it in one day - I read it in one sitting I enjoyed it so much. The characters feel real and represent every walk of life including a crooked and nasty trainer, a mean and menacing jockey who will do anything to keep Nikki from following her dreams of being a jockey, a kooky but loveable friend who works at the track, rich eccentric owners, a glamour-puss girlfriend of one of the owners who befriends Nikki, a mysterious stranger who lurks around the track keeping Nikki ill at ease, a down on his luck old groom who seems to have 'the shine' and a 'Hellish' horse she rescues from the kill pen plus several other characters whose personalities keep the pace of the book going strong. Nikki's experiences go from good to worse starting with the killing of one of the barn's best horses and follows with a murder which Nikki is framed for. Already living on a tight budget, she is banned from being anywhere near the racetrack and must find a way to keep things afloat while trying to clear her name. She enters into a very dark world on the otherside of racing full of unsavory characters with very questionable practices. But there are also several humorous moments in the book as well. Through it all Nikki remains determined and undeterred and you grow to like her even more. As the story unfolds you find yourself more and more drawn into the drama that unfolds in her life and get to the point where you can't put the book down. I really recommend this book and look foward to future novels by Ms. Sasscer Hill. ~~~ Dani
I have attended Maryland Racing since the late 50's when I tagged along with my father. He owned a few horses and I went to morning workouts, met jockeys and trainers, saw the sights and smelled the smells. For the next 50 plus years, I have stayed in Maryland, owned horses, actually came out on the plus side, been gambling on horses with a brief interlude of personal breeding, and now have had the pleasure of meeting Sasscer Hill on facebook and reading Full Mortality. This is not a gambling book, but I want to point out that I have never read a gambling book that paints a true picture of real gamblers. Full Mortality paints our local racing scene like a John Ford western. I have to read the rest of her books, before I get to tell her true stories, but for all I know they are in the books I have yet to read. I can't wait. Bobby Brendler, Rockville, Maryland
Sasscer Hill has written an exciting, well written mystery set in the thoroughbred race horse world with a plot that moves as fast as a graded stakes winner. This well researched mystery has a buffet of quirky characters who interact in amusing and sometimes frightening ways. “Full Mortality” has the unmistakable touch of a race horse insider with much hands on expertise dealing with race horses of all temperaments. Sasscer Hill’s love of horses threads through this mystery in a way that touches the reader’s heart. She looks straightforwardly at the seamy side of racing as well as depicting trainers, owners, and others in the race industry who are devoted to horses they love and to making the sport safe and thrilling. Her know-how furnishes a satisfying and creative ending to the antics of our hero Nikki Latrelle in a fun, sexy ending to the book. This could be a juicy role for a woman in the world of the male jockey and I can see it in a movie that would interest all. Oh, and you’ll love “Hellish”, the filly Nikki loves.
I rarely find myself sucked into reading all the books in a series, but I can’t seem to stop myself from downloading the next story in the Nikki Latrelle mysteries series. Nikki is a tough little cookie making it as female jockey in an even tougher racing world. I have stayed away from the track because I know that many of the horses are pushed beyond healthy limits to win. Sasscer Hill has the inside track on the behind the scenes realities of how the horses are treated and the hardships of the sport of kings. The plots in the series are unique and compelling. I love a good twisty turner and Nikki manages to get herself mixed up in murders that are not her fault. This series has become a guilty pleasure.
